No matter who turns out for the English team, whether it be Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore or Wallace and Grommet, we will always, ALWAYS have chance in the world cup! But why? The English national team continues to fail in every big tournament, its even been 18 years of further hurt since Skinner and Baddiel created their heart felt anthem about being hurt.
The question always is, are we underachieving or are we just not as good as we think? The English Premier League is renowned as the best footballing league in the world with the best talent and the most exciting football, so what is going wrong when it comes to those players representing their country? Well the problem could be that 1/3 of the premier league is made up of English players. In contrast, in the current World cup holder’s Spain’s top division, Spanish internationals account for 59% of the players.
In most footballing nations, if not all, this would present a huge issue but not with us. We want our cake and we also want to eat it. It is the year of the World Cup, in one of the hottest continents on the face of the earth, Brazil.This will probably be a huge issue for our fair skinned boys such as Wayne Rooney who’s infamous temper may get the better of him…again.
Out of our natural habitat and playing against the likes of Germany, Spain, Brazil and Argentina there is no reason at all to believe we can win this tournament, yet somewhere in the back of our minds, we believe we can do it! we will be there in the beer gardens, tutting our way to the front of an hour long queue for a beer whilst trying to keep your eyes on the drama as it unfolds. We will put up with the annoying bloke with the horn as he ferociously blows himself black and blue slowly but surely damaging your eardrum to the point of no return.
It doesn’t really matter how elegant the Spanish are or how efficient the Germans are or how much flair the Brazilians have. Our passion and misplaced belief outweighs any skill or tactics out there. So after a brief evaluation on our chances, surely these odds are worth a quid!.
